12∞ · Question 9.2.7

Is there a test for machine consciousness?

Not one that works. The famous test proposed in 1950 asks only whether a machine can pass for human in conversation, which measures imitation; current systems arguably pass it.

From the book 12∞ Twelve to Infinity by D.R. Davenport. The full answer is free to read with an iBelieve account.
